The Cygolite Virtual Night Riding Game!

Posted on 26 February 2010 by Michael Echo Roberson

post-cygolite

Cygolite, the leading manufacturer of advanced bicycle lighting systems has created a virtual cycling game as a fun way to keep up your reflexes.

The game consists of a cyclist mountain biking at night. As the rider, you navigate through various obstacles such as rocks and trees while gathering “lights” to increase your speed. The more “lights” you gather the faster you go, increasing the difficulty as you progress through the game. The faster you go and the more obstacles you avoid, the better your score. This game was created as a fun way to keep up your reflexes especially for those who can’t ride in snow ridden areas. It has three levels of difficulty to choose from and to make it more interesting, there is a light sweepstakes for those that play. See www.cygolite.com for more details.

ABOUT US
Since 1991, Cygolite has been a world-wide leader in advanced bicycling lighting systems. Based in Orange County California, our experienced R&D staff develops premier lighting systems from the ground up with the quality and technology that cyclists seek. Registration Now Open Tour of America’s Dairyland Cycling Series!

Posted on 25 February 2010 by Michael Echo Roberson

post-dairy-1
Come June We’ll Be Moooo-ving and Shaking!

Milwaukee, Wis. – Registration is now open for the 2010 Tour of America’s Dairyland presented by Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, an omnium bicycle race across 11 Southeastern Wisconsin cities, June 17-27, promoter Midwest Cycling Series has announced.

Pro and amateur racers of multiple categories including Women Cat 3/4, Pro Women 1/2, Cat 4/5, Cat 3, Masters 1/2/3/ 35+, Masters 4/5 35+, and Pro Men 1/2 will compete for over $105,000 in cash and primes in the 2010 Tour of America’s Dairyland. Racers of all seven categories will have the opportunity to participate 10 consecutive days, June 18-27, across eight criteriums and two road races. Opening night on June 17 at the Shorewood Criterium Cycling Classic will feature Men and Women Pro races only.

post-dairy-2“There are some serious incentives being offered in this year’s Tour of America’s Dairyland,” said Tom Schuler, Olympic cyclist and co-founder of the Tour. “With over $105,000 in cash and primes up for grabs for pros and amateurs, I think the spectators lining the streets will be in for some exciting competitive racing.”

Larger Men and Women Pro fields should be attracted to Tour of America’s Dairyland as the Day 3 Race, Giro d’ Grafton, has been added to the USA CRITS Calendar. Pro Men and Pro Women will be battling it out to the finish for $9,000 and $4,000 in cash, plus primes, respectively, on June 19.

Continued Schuler, “Giro d’ Grafton is already wildly popular and with the added USA Crits status and purse, there is going to be some solid, aggressive riding among the Pros.”

Also added to the Tour of America’s Dairyland this year is the Women’s 3/4 category, to engage and encourage less experienced female riders to safely compete against racers of a shared skill level on the same courses as the Pros.

In addition to Shorewood, other Wisconsin communities hosting criteriums in the second year of the Tour of America’s Dairyland include Thiensville, Grafton, Appleton, Sheboygan, Waterloo, Fond du Lac, Downer Avenue on Milwaukee’s Eastside, and Waukesha. Greenbush and Elkhart Lake will be home to road races, the latter of which will be held on the historic Road America racetrack.

“Presenting sponsor Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board and all of our host communities are so supportive and into these races,” added Schuler. “We are absolutely pumped for this June and are going to show racers and spectators alike a crazy good time…maybe I’ll even jump into the field for a race or two.” The high energy of the bicycling action will be complemented in most communities by family-friendly activities, entertainment, a Sports Expo benefiting Racers Against Childhood Cancer (RACC), plenty of food and drink from local vendors, and much more.

Advance registration will remain open on SportsBaseOnline until June 13, 2010. Endorsed and supported by the Wisconsin Cycling Association and United States Cycling Federation, Tour of America’s Dairyland will have updates posted on www.TourofAmericasDairyland.com

USA Cycling announces 2010 Professional Mountain Bike Gravity Tour (Pro GRT)

Colorado Springs, Colo. (February 23, 2010) USA Cycling announced today the 2010 USA Cycling Professional Mountain Bike Gravity Tour (Pro GRT). In its second year, the five-race series will continue to raise the level of competitive gravity racing across the United States by providing a consistent stage of international-caliber events for elite gravity racers to showcase their downhill skills.

post-usagravity-1

The Pro GRT is a downhill-only series for 2010 and will visit four states from April to September, beginning with a return visit to Port Angeles, Wash. for the Northwest Cup, April 24-25. The series will then make a trip to the opposite coast for the Plattekill Gravity Open in New York’s Roxbury Bike Park, May 22-23. Midway through the season, racers will contest the Northstar-at-Tahoe event in Truckee, Calif., June 26-27. The Pro GRT will then move to Winter Park, Colo. for the Trestle Bike Park (Crankworx Colorado), July 31-August 1, before concluding again with the Whiteface 5th Annual 5K Downhill in Lake Placid, New York, September 11-12.

Each of the five stops will offer series ranking points to top finishers, resulting in overall individual titles for professional men and women. Additionally, competitors will have the opportunity to accumulate international ranking points as two of the five races are inscripted on the UCI calendar. The racers with the most points throughout the five-race series will be recognized as the best gravity athletes competing on U.S. soil.

The 2010 series will also feature an Amateur GRT which, like the Pro GRT, will give Expert-level Category 1 racers the opportunity to compete against each other for an overall series crown.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (February 19, 2010)— The 2010 USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship will be held in the northern Chicago suburb of Glencoe, Ill. on Saturday, August 14, the national governing body announced today. The event, which attracts many of the nation’s top professionals, has historically been held in Downers Grove, Ill. but will move to a new location for the first time in the event’s 24-year history.

The 24th annual USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship will feature a new course and will be sponsored by AT&T. The day’s premier event, featuring the donning of the prestigious “Stars-and-Stripes” jersey to the top American finisher, will also be moved from its traditional Sunday slot to Saturday in Glencoe.

Glencoe, a thriving village on Chicago’s North Shore, is approximately 15 miles north of downtown Chicago and 26 miles from Downer’s Grove, the USA Cycling Professional Criterium Championship home for the last 23 years. This new location is accustomed to bike racing and has been home to the Glencoe Grand Prix for the past three years. The Glencoe Grand Prix is organized by the Glencoe Educational Foundation, a charitable organization that supports schools in Glencoe. The event’s long-time promoter, Special Events Management is coordinating with the Glencoe Educational Foundation to bring a new level of professional bike racing to Glencoe.

USA Cycling will again be working with Special Events Management, which has produced the USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship since 1987. Although not national championship events this year, there will be continued strong support for a professional women’s race, as well as a race for elite riders that are at the top of the amateur ranks.

“We look forward to Glencoe and a new course for our fastest and most exciting road national championship,” said Sean Petty, USA Cycling chief operating officer. “We also appreciate AT&T’s support of this great event and we’re confident Special Events Management will continue to organize a first-class event.”

“The Foundation, along with the Village of Glencoe and AT&T, is thrilled to help host this year’s USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship,” said Jon Knouse, President of the Glencoe Educational Foundation and Race Director of the Glencoe Grand Prix. “Bringing the national championship here to augment the GGP is a great honor and we know the entire Glencoe community will welcome the cycling community with open arms and a big red carpet.”

“At AT&T Illinois, we’re proud to actively support events and initiatives that enrich and strengthen our communities. That’s why we’re so pleased to support the AT&T USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship at the Glencoe Grand Prix,” said Paul La Schiazza, President of AT&T Illinois. “At AT&T, we’re in the business of connecting people, everywhere they live and work and doing it better than anyone else. The Glencoe Grand Prix as part of this national championship is a special event that connects people and participants from throughout the country and throughout our state with the welcoming Village of Glencoe. We’re extremely proud of our partnership and look forward to welcoming the cycling community to Glencoe and Illinois for what promises to be an exciting event.”

“We are proud to be working with USA Cycling again to produce for the 24th consecutive year, this national championship event,” said Hank Zemola, CEO of Special Events Management. “Our skills and experience producing some of the best professional bike races in the USA fits nicely with the enthusiasm and support coming from the Glencoe Educational Foundation and the Village of Glencoe.”

The AT&T USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship is part of the USA Cycling Professional Tour, a men’s-only, season-long calendar that determines the best professional rider and team on American soil. It is also one of 16 national championship events that USA Cycling endorses across five disciplines of cycling for various divisions of amateurs and professionals.

Philadelphia to Host Brompton U.S. Championships

Posted on 06 February 2010 by Michael Echo Roberson

Philadelphia to Host Brompton U.A. Championships

Folder bike race is lead-in to Brompton World Championship in England.

Saturday, March 20, 2010, the first annual Brompton U.S. Championship will take place at Memorial Hall in West Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, as part of the Philly Phlyer collegiate bike race. Start time is 1 p.m.

This event is inspired by the Brompton World Championship, first held in Barcelona, Spain in 2006. The BWC has now grown into a bona fide international happening, which attracted more than 500 riders for the 2009 event held at Blenheim Palace, England. Like the U.K. race, the Philadelphia event is limited to riders of the Brompton Folder Bike, one of the U.K.’s most famous exports.

That’s not the only unusual element of this race—it will follow the U.K. rules: helmets are a must, but so is a blazer or suit jacket, collared shirt and tie. Sports attire is not permitted, unless it is hidden by business dress!

wcm-post-brompton-pink“Poor dress sense will not be tolerated,” declared the organizers of the 2009 race. In reality, some participants’ concept of “business attire” ran to kilts and wild plaid trousers. One cyclist raced in a gorilla suit—with a necktie, of course. Brompton smiles on this trend, offering prizes for the best-dressed racers, and the U.S. event will do the same.

Brompton dealer Michael McGettigan, who has taken part in two BWCs (finishing well off the front) is helping to organize the Philadelphia race. “This is a big step for U.S. bike culture,” says McGettigan. “The Brompton World Championship is one of those events you have to see to believe. It’s a bit Halloween, a bit Tour de France, and a bit, ‘Hey, let’s ride down the
pub!”

For all the fun, this U.K. race attracted some fast company: in 2008, Tour de France stage winner Roberto Heras competed—and came in second (!) to Britain’s own Alistair Kay. Heras returned to win in 2009, by just a fraction of a second, with Kay demoted to third. Alistair Kay called the BWC “A fantastically eccentric British day out!”

This first Philadelphia race will be a U.S. Cycling Federation-listed event and spectators can expect to see just how fast these little British bikes can go.

Brompton is sponsoring the U.S. event—hoping to bring America’s quickest Brompton riders to this year’s BWC in England this fall. To that end, the winning man and woman in the Philadelphia races will get their plane tickets—and entry fees– covered by Brompton.

The U.S. event will run a single, 6-mile lap starting near Memorial Hall in West Fairmount Park. As in the U.K., participants will run to their folded bikes at the start, Le Mans style.

In addition to the trip to the Brompton World Championship that awaits the top man and woman, there will also be prizes for second and third—and Best-Dressed.

Full details and registration online please visit:
BROMTON WEBSITE

Deadline for online registration is March 11. On the day registration may be available.

Note: the Brompton race comes right in the middle of the Philly Phlyer, a day of top-level collegiate cycling; the first student road races go off around 8am, and continue through the afternoon.

About the Brompton folder bicycle

The Brompton is a bike which rides superbly, is safe, agile and fast, yet folds easily and quickly into a highly-compact and portable package. Finely-engineered and elegant, the Brompton has a full-sized frame, made mainly of steel for strength and stiffness. Its rigid frame and accurate alignment make for a lively, first-rate ride. The Brompton is designed to be practical and light enough to be genuinely portable.

First sold in the U.S. in 1995, Brompton has moved to grow in the U.S., appointing Ed Rae as their North American Agent and establishing a network of more than 30 dealers across the U.S. and Canada.

Yeti Cycles 1st Women Only Mountain Bike Event

Posted on 04 February 2010 by Michael Echo Roberson

wcm-post-yeti

Yeti Cycles and Bigfoot Productions presents
First Ever Women Only Mountain Bike Event

Lakewood, Colo.— With Colorado’s famed history with the sport of mountain biking, it is only fitting for the first ever women’s only mountain bike event to launch on the state’s legendary turf. In 1990, Durango hosted the first ever UCI Mountain Bike World Championships and two Coloradoans, Ned Overend and Juli Furtado, were crowned World Champions. Crested Butte is home of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and Museum and the Leadville 100 attracts some of the most renown racers from all over the world to compete in one of the toughest mountain bike races in the U.S.

Now on June 12, 2010 the Beti Bike Bash will add to the history with its debut as the first ever women’s only mountain bike event at Lakewood’s Bear Creek Lake Park, 15 miles west of Denver, Colo.

Team Yeti Beti will play host to this event with presenting sponsors Yeti Cycles and Bigfoot Productions of Golden, Colo. The event will offer women several exciting and fun races for all ages and abilities. The course at Bear Creek Lake Park is a five mile, non-technical singletrack loop with views of surrounding Red Rocks Park. Beginners (CAT 3) will ride two laps, with the sport (CAT 2) riders racing three laps, and the Open/Pro race featuring four fast laps. There will also be a three-woman relay fun race for those who want to experience the camaraderie of a mountain bike race with their friends.

The Beti Bike Bash is being supported by many of the Yeti Beti’s team sponsors. Yeti Cycles was the first to commit their support and help launch the idea. “Chris Conroy, the president of Yeti, pretty much told us to make it happen. We’ve wanted to do this since we started the team in 2007 but didn’t have the resources to do it until now”, says Amy Thomas of Team Yeti Beti. “The Beti Bike Bash is something that the team supports 100 percent as a way of giving back to our sport.”

Citing other successful women’s only events in triathlon and running, it seemed logical to the team to host such an event. “Mountain bike races are intimidating for beginner women for several reasons,” said Sarah Rawley, Bigfoot Productions public relations. “Steep climbs, rocky descents, high altitude, and often you are gone all day from your family. We wanted to break down those barriers and offer something that any woman who rides would enjoy. With Bear Creek’s close proximity to Denver and great trail system, it was a perfect venue for an event like this.”

For more information, visit www.betibikebash.com. Online registration will be available in February at www.active.com.

Bigfoot Productions was established in 2006 in conjunction with Yeti Cycles to promote bike industry involvement in racing and expand and improve mountain bike racing in the Rocky Mountains. For further inquiries please contact srawley [at] yeticycles.com.
